Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Gilbert Owner’s Guide

Linear gate operators in Gilbert typically need bracket welding, arm fabrication, or control-box mounting-plate repair when the original steel fatigues from our heat cycles. Owners usually find the problem when the gate starts catching at mid-travel or the operator arm has shifted an inch downhill from the post. In Power Ranch and the older Agritopia builds, we see a lot of this: the bracket looked fine in March, but by August the weld cracked where the Arizona sun had been working on it all summer.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear welding and fabrication covers the hardware that connects the operator to the gate, not the motor itself. We regularly fabricate and weld for Linear’s LS series (LS150, LS300, LS500), the LA500 and LA850 swing operators, and the SL series slide gates. The LS150 uses a lighter 11-gauge mounting bracket that fatigues faster on heavier iron gates, while the LA850 needs a 7-gauge or thicker arm bracket to handle its torque output without flexing.

To identify your part, check the stamped model number on the operator housing, then measure the existing bracket’s center-to-center bolt spacing and the arm’s reach from post to gate frame. Linear OEM brackets run part numbers starting with 2150, 2500, or 3000-series prefixes, but we also fabricate from ASTM A36 steel when the OEM bracket is back-ordered or when a custom angle fits the post better. Aftermarket equivalents exist for common LS and LA brackets, though we prefer to match the original gauge exactly, or go one step thicker if the gate has been modified with heavier infill.

One compatibility gotcha: the LA500 and LA850 share the same bolt pattern but use different arm lengths. We’ve seen homeowners order the LA500 bracket for an LA850 and end up with an arm that’s three inches short at full extension, stressing the weld at the gate bracket.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate catches or binds at the same point in every cycle. This usually means the mounting bracket has shifted or the weld has cracked, letting the operator arm droop. In Gilbert’s heat, we’ve seen brackets that were square in April sit a half-inch out of plumb by September.
• You hear metal-on-metal grinding near the operator arm. The arm bushing or the bracket hole has wallowed out from vibration. Left alone, the arm starts eating into the bracket steel and the repair jumps from a bushing replacement to full bracket fabrication.
• The operator runs but the gate barely moves, or moves in jerks. The arm may be flexing at a cracked weld instead of transferring force to the gate. We check this by marking the arm with a Sharpie and running a cycle, if the mark separates at the weld, we’ve found it.
• The post bracket has pulled its lag bolts or the concrete anchor is spinning. This is often a fabrication issue, not a fastener issue. The original bracket may have been too small for the gate’s weight, or the weld between the plate and the sleeve failed and transferred shock load to the anchors.
• Visible rust streaks or scaling at any weld joint. Gilbert’s dry climate slows rust, but irrigation overspray and monsoon humidity still find weld seams. Once rust starts under the paint at a bracket weld, the cross-section drops fast and the bracket fails without warning.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the point where a grinder and a 110-volt welder from the hardware store won’t cut it. You can safely check: whether the bracket bolts are tight, whether the arm moves freely by hand with the operator disconnected, and whether the post itself is plumb. A four-foot level and a wrench are enough for that.

Where DIY goes wrong is in assuming a cracked weld can just be “touched up” from the outside. Gate brackets are structural steel under cyclical load, a proper repair means cutting out the failed material, prepping the joint to white metal, and laying in a weld that penetrates the full cross-section. We’ve been called to Gilbert jobs where a homeowner’s repair held for two weeks, then let go and dropped a 400-pound gate onto a parked car.
